Scott Thurber's Captain's License, issued by the United States Coast Guard, covers Master of Sailing Vessel operations on inland waters. The license is issued to Scott Thurber by name and reflects training and knowledge in vessel operation, navigation, safety and seamanship on the waters where Irish Raider Outfitters runs charters. When you book a fishing trip on Lake Champlain, you're getting a guide who operates under this credential.
Lake Champlain sits between New York and Vermont and is a large freshwater lake known for its diverse fish population. Scott runs the Irish Raider Outfitters fishing service from Peru, New York, using a 21' Bayliner center console powered by a 150 horsepower Mercury engine. The boat is equipped with light tackle, spinning, popping, trolling, jigging and other fishing gear configured for the lake's target species.
Irish Raider Outfitters offers several ways to fish Lake Champlain depending on what appeals to you. Early-morning trips let you experience the calm of the lake at first light when fishing grounds come alive. Evening charters take you out as the day moves toward sunset, with the surrounding scenery turning golden. There's also an eight-hour charter option if you want a full day on the water pursuing lake trout and other remarkable catches. Each trip is built around the species that make Lake Champlain a favorite among freshwater anglers: lake trout, brook trout, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, yellow perch, northern pike and rainbow trout.
New to fishing or looking to learn at a relaxed pace? Captain Scott runs beginner-friendly outings designed for families and anyone eager to get comfortable with a rod and reel. You'll learn casting, reeling and the basics of freshwater fishing while exploring Lake Champlain's waters.
When ice season arrives, Irish Raider Outfitters shifts to ice fishing on Adirondack ponds and hard-water lakes. A six-hour ice fishing trip takes you to remote Adirondack waters where you can target pike, trout, landlocked salmon and pan fish with expert guidance. In spring, as the ice comes out, Irish Raider Outfitters runs pond fishing trips in the Adirondacks targeting brook trout during the feeding frenzy that follows ice-out. These trips require a paddle into remote ponds and are aimed at avid brook trout anglers looking for an epic experience.
Before heading out on Lake Champlain, check that you have a valid New York or Vermont fishing license if required by state regulations where you'll be fishing. Scott and the Irish Raider Outfitters team will have the boat, tackle and expertise covered. Dress for the weather and bring sunscreen and water for a full day on the lake. Early-morning trips mean an early start, so plan accordingly. For ice fishing trips in winter, wear layers and cold-weather gear suitable for being on frozen Adirondack water. Pond fishing trips in spring are more adventurous; ask Scott about what to bring and wear for paddling and wading.
The Irish Raider Outfitters boat can carry up to four guests, making it ideal for a family or small group of friends. If you have questions about what species are biting, what gear to bring or how to prepare for a specific trip, reach out to Scott or visit www.irishraideroutfitters.com for more details.
